My seven year old daughter was suddenly and inexplicably diagnosed as type 1 diabetic last August. Our family team "Rowan's Recruits" have been working hard on fundraising efforts for this year's Walk To Cure Diabetes, since last September. When I learned that Black Press was a sponsor, I was proud, and hoped that this walk would get the attention and news coverage it so desperately needed.



So you can imagine my utter disappointment, when as a sponsor, there was absolutely NO mention of the walk, OR the herculean fundraising efforts. I believe that Black Press had the ability to dramastically increase awareness of this community event, and at the same time, increase awareness of fundraising efforts.



My seven year old daughter has to test her blood glucose, with a special sharp lancet to her finger, 8 - 10 times a day. It hurts! She also receives two insulin injections everyday (unfortunately, sometimes more). This chronic, incurable disease has very much infringed on the innocence of childhood. As her mother, I will do ANYTHING in my power to help facilitate the discovery of a cure.



I guess my only question now is, as an event sponsor: how come YOU won't?

My family were proud participants in the 2011 TELUS Walk To Cure Diabetes, benefitting the research efforts of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's quest for a cure to type 1 diabetes. My seven year old daughter was diagnosed type 1 diabetic last summer, with absolutely no family history of the disease. We were proud to see the Global VW Beetle vehicle at the Fraser Valley Walk. Your newscast is on in our home everynight at 6pm, and your anchors feel almost like family. So you can imagine my disappointment when there was utterly NO coverage of the walk in any of your broadcasts. 300,000 Canadians are living with type 1 diabetes. A chronic life-long (sometimes life threatening) illness. It is an unfortunate position to be in, when you have to resort to fundraising yourself, in an effort for a cure for your small innocent child, to be discovered. With coverage, awareness is increased. With increased awareness and knowledge, fundraising is that much easier. I know that your station promotes fundraising for Children's Hospital, and a variety of different cancer walks. Which makes the omission of the Walk To Cure Diabetes that much more disappointing. The representation of your station without coverage made your presence seem like a cheap advertising ploy.

This is a date bigger than Christmas at our house right now!

"Rowan's Recruits" is $294 away from our $1000 fundraising goal. All monies go directly to the Juvenille Diabetes Research Foundation to fund further research to a cure.

What will you do in six weeks?

In six weeks Rowan will have had to do 252 finger pokes to test her blood glucose.... and will have been subjected to a minimum of 42 insulin injections. That number will jump dramatically if she catches a cold, flu or other virus, potentially bringing the number of insulin injections to 84. Possibly more.

There is absolutely no minimum donation. Every $5 or $10 builds up quickly, and you NEVER know which mysterious donation could potentially be the one to help the good folks at JDRF stumble onto a cure.

Please..... my precious L'il Bones and our family really, really, REALLY need a cure.
